WINNING ON THE TRACK
During the recent Vic V8s at Phillip Island, the LASER 3D & Force Accessories race car, driven by our very own Brian Finn, tore up the track and led the competition.
Brian says “I was competing in the Vic V8s at Phillip Island, we were fortunate that despite showers throughout the weekend all of our sessions were dry.”
The first session was qualifying on the Saturday morning with 19 cars in the field. I managed to secure pole with a 2.2 second gap to second place with a time of 1:43.5.
There were supposed to be 4 races over the weekend, I was leading the first race when another vehicle dropped oil right down the main straight resulting in 3 cars sliding off track and one of those making heavy contact with the inside wall at turn 1.
Due to the damage to the wall and the time required to clean up the oil the first race was red flagged with no results being recorded.
During the second race I was passed by Len Cattlin in a Ford Mustang and finished in second place however the Mustang was running in the Associate class as it doesn’t comply with the Vic V8 rules effectively giving me first place for the category.
I also recorded the fastest lap for the race at 1:44.8 During the third race on Sunday morning I managed to retake the lead finishing in first place and again setting the fastest lap of 1:43.3
The fourth race started with a great battle between Len Cattlin and myself with the lead swapping a couple of times. I managed to get out in front and pulled a reasonable gap before getting caught behind lapped traffic in a section of track that had yellow flags displayed meaning I couldn’t pass. This allowed Len to close the gap and he managed to get past me at the exit of Southern Loop on the final lap. I crossed the line in second place but again because Len is only running in the Associate class it gave me the win and points in the Vic V8 category.
I obtained maximum points of 90 for the 3 races moving me into second place in the overall championship just 8 points off the lead with 2 more rounds to go.
The next round will be at Winton on September 29-30.
